US President Donald Trump has said that no country can “blackmail the world” by attempting to block the Strait of Hormuz, amid rising tensions over Iran.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said the United States does not rely on the strategic waterway for its energy needs, stressing that the country has sufficient oil and gas resources.
“We do not use the Strait of Hormuz and we do not need it,” he said, adding that oil shipments to the US continue through other routes.
The president also suggested that Washington would not require assistance from other countries if it were to take part in a blockade of Iranian ports, though he noted that some nations were prepared to support such efforts.
Trump said he had received calls earlier in the day from several countries regarding Iran, and claimed that Tehran had reached out in an attempt to negotiate.
However, he reiterated that the US would not agree to any deal unless Iran abandons its pursuit of nuclear weapons.
“Iran will never obtain nuclear weapons,” Trump said, adding that previous US administrations had regretted not taking stronger action.
He also described Cuba as a “failed state” and said Washington could turn its attention there after addressing the situation with Iran.
Trump added that China’s leader also wants the issue to be resolved.
