US President Donald Trump lashed out at NATO again ahead of his meeting with Secretary General Mark Rutte later this week, foreign media reports.
"We spend crazy amounts for NATO and they weren't there when we needed them," says Trump.
The United States, the president states, spends "600 billion dollars a year" for NATO and for the defense of allies, with costs defined as "crazy" and not always reciprocated in terms of cooperation. "I would say that the real number is this. Think about it: the figures we spend are so absurd for NATO, and they weren't there for us," he adds, emphasizing how Washington bears much of the costs for the protection of allied countries "from Russia, above all." Then, always referring to the allies of the Alliance, he adds: "When we ask for help on small things... these are small things, not the big issues... they tell us no, we prefer not to help. It's a stupid thing to say - he concludes - because we could say it to them too, and we could do it."
