Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that the risk of foreign interference in the country’s 2027 elections is real, APA reports.
She made the remarks while answering journalists’ questions at a press conference.
Sheinbaum commented on a reform that provides for the annulment of election results in the event of foreign interference.
The head of state supported the bill adopted at the initiative of the ruling party and rejected criticism from the opposition.
“All Mexicans should agree that there must be no foreign interference in elections in Mexico,” the president stressed.
Sheinbaum noted that there are already precedents regarding the influence of foreign funding on national political processes. As an example, she cited the organization “Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity,” which she claimed received funding from U.S. institutions through the U.S. Embassy.
