Obama calls German chancellor over eurozone crisis

Baku-APA. U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday called German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the European countries are to meet over the deepening eurozone debt crisis, APA reports siting Xinhua.

A White House statement said on Tuesday that the two leaders discussed the debt crisis before the European Council meets on Thursday, noting that "they agreed that dealing effectively with this crisis is important for sustaining the economic recovery in Europe as well as for the global economy."

In their meeting in Brussels on Thursday, the European Union leaders will discuss another bailout package for Greece, which received emergency loans of more than 110 billion euros (about 156 billion U.S. dollars) last year, to try to steer it from a default.

In her visit to Greece on Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton voiced strong support for Athens’ efforts to deal with its debt crisis.
