Baku-APA. U.S. President Barack Obama Thursday discussed UN issues and the Libya conflict with his visiting Gabonese counterpart Ali Bongo Ondimba, whose country holds the rotating chair of the UN Security Council, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Topics at the White House meeting was focused on the UN meeting on HIV/AIDS, Sudan, Cote d’ Ivoire and other UN-related issues, officials said.

On Libya, the two presidents reaffirmed support for Security Council Resolution 1973, and agreed that "a democratic transition in Libya should begin for the Libyan people," the White House said in a statement.

White House spokesman Jay Carney later on called the U.S.-Gabon ties "important," saying that the African country is playing an increasingly important role as a regional and global leader.

"Gabon has made some very significant and courageous votes in the United Nations in support of objectives that the United States has, including dealing with Iran and Libya and Cote d’Ivoire, including with issues that have to do with human rights," he told a regular press briefing.
