US, Kazakhstan Discuss Bilateral Ties

Baku-APA. U.S. President Barack Obama has phoned his Kazakh counterpart, Nursultan Nazarbayev, to discuss a wide range of bilateral issues, including nuclear security and democracy, APA reports quoting voanews.com website.

In a statement Saturday, the White House said the two leaders reviewed progress on meeting goals that the two sides established during their meeting at the Nuclear Security summit last year.

The statement said Mr. Obama thanked Mr. Nazarbayev for his support of mutual efforts to foster security and prosperity in Afghanistan.

It said the two leaders also affirmed that Kazakhstan’s economic modernization must go hand-in-hand with the country’s political modernization.

In his recent inauguration address, President Nazarbayev acknowledged that the Kazakh parliamentary elections scheduled for 2012 offer an important opportunity for greater modernization.
