Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova has delivered a video address to the Second Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference currently held in the city of Phnom Penh of the Kingdom of Cambodia and themed ‘Solidarity for Peace and Shared Prosper ity: Strengthening International Law and Resolving Conflicts Peacefully,’ the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis told APA.
In her address, the Speaker expressed confidence that the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference, a young parliamentary organisation established in 2025, will continue evolving as an open and effective platform for parliamentary leaders. She remarked that this organisation can contribute materially to the progress of parliamentary diplomacy and to reaching the goals at the core of this Conference, namely, peace, respect for international law, peaceful resolution of conflicts and common prosperity.
The Speaker of the Milli Majlis emphasised that the goals in question are especially relevant today. Armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions and humanitarian crises endanger human lives, obstruct development and steepen inequality. Not one country can ensure sustained peace alone and no society is capable of prospering in isolation.
Having said that peace ought to be based on international law, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis declared the necessity of observing unwaveringly the principles of the UN Charter and of resolving disputes via dialogue, negotiations and other peaceful means.
In her video address, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova touched upon parliaments’ practical responsibility within this process and stated her confidence that parliamentary diplomacy is fit to alleviate tensions, strengthen confidence and promote resolution of disputes peacefully. She also wished the event participants success.
