Climate change is affecting urban life, Umayra Taghiyeva, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, said during the event titled “Stories from the Frontline: Advancing Urban Climate Heritage” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

She stated that 58 percent of the world’s population lives in cities.

According to Umayra Taghiyeva, cities are highly vulnerable to anomalous and extreme weather events.

The deputy minister noted that the contradiction between ecological balance and economic development is being felt everywhere: “We must now implement people-centered policies. Sustainable urban development should begin with a national vision for the future.”

She added that cities and communities in Azerbaijan are facing a number of climate threats: “Over the past 10 years, floods in Azerbaijan have increased more than 18 times, while droughts have also intensified. Water resources entering the country have decreased by 30%. The decline in the Caspian Sea’s water level is making the situation even more difficult. We must adapt to new realities. Early warning systems can make our lives easier. We must ensure that we live in harmony with nature.”
