The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan remains severe, Stephanie Loose, Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) for Afghanistan, said during the event titled “Housing in the Post-Crisis Period: Finding Sustainable Solutions," APA reports.
She noted that since September 2023, the country’s population has increased by more than 12 percent and more than half of the population needs humanitarian assistance.
It was emphasized that millions of people in the country still live as internally displaced persons. Climate change, natural disasters and long-term conflicts were cited among the main reasons for this.
Stephanie Loose stated that the return of more than 5 million Afghan refugees from Iran has made the situation even more difficult: “This process creates additional pressure on the country’s social and economic capacities.”
The UN official also noted that the Afghan government is taking steps toward allocating land plots for the returning population. Nevertheless, the settlement problem of the vast majority of people remains unresolved.
The speech emphasized the importance of support from the international community and called for strengthening cooperation in the fields of humanitarian aid, establishment of sustainable settlements and reintegration of internally displaced persons.
