COP29 in Baku gave impetus to the creation of new bicycle routes, dedicated bus lanes, the renovation of Khagani Garden in the city center and the reconstruction of the 28 May area. These demonstrate that human-centered design is possible in the city, Anna Soave, Head of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Office in Azerbaijan, said during her speech at the conference titled “Bringing the New Urban Agenda to Life: Integrating Air Quality and Green Infrastructure into Sustainable Cities” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.
“These projects are especially indicators of a new urban direction in this city, and I highly appreciate this. In this regard, WUF13 can further strengthen that direction. This can only happen if we are able to transform the energy of the forum into lasting commitments. I often speak about the importance of major international events such as COP creating a concrete and lasting legacy,” Soave noted.
The UN-Habitat representative stressed that housing policy, mobility, climate adaptation, waste management and the design of public spaces should be managed as a unified system.
According to her, urban planning is not only an infrastructure issue, but also a matter of public health and social welfare.
