Young people in different regions of the world are raising similar concerns related to access to affordable housing, the creation of safe public spaces, climate risks, and participation in decision-making processes, Patrick Canagasingham, Director of the Regional Programmes Division at UN-Habitat, said during the Children and Youth Assembly organized within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, APA reports.
According to him, ahead of the forum UN-Habitat conducted consultations with young people in Asia-Pacific, Africa, Arab countries, and other regions.
Patrick Canagasingham noted that although young people across all regions highlighted the same problems, they also proposed concrete solutions.
“We must move from consultation to coalition-building, from pilot projects to policy-shaping initiatives, and from formal participation to inclusive governance,” he emphasized.
According to the UN-Habitat official, young people are no longer only voicing problems, but are also collecting data, developing solutions, and leading the transformation of the communities in which they live.
He added that ensuring meaningful and institutional participation of youth in decision-making is essential for the sustainable development of cities.
