More than 60% of people displaced worldwide settle in cities rather than refugee camps, said Anna Soave, UN-Habitat Country Representative in Azerbaijan, APA-Economics reports from the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku.
According to her, these people often live in informal settlements, far from basic services, employment opportunities, and safe living conditions.
“For people who have lost their homes and cannot return, cities are both places of shelter and spaces of new challenges,” A. Soave noted.
She stated that climate change is no longer a problem of the future, but of today, and that it further deepens existing problems, especially in conflict-affected areas.
According to the UN-Habitat official, climate change puts additional pressure on already fragile systems, complicates the reconstruction of infrastructure, and increases the vulnerability of communities.
“We must design infrastructure not only for sunny days, but to withstand storms,” A. Soave emphasized.
She added that UN-Habitat, together with the Government of Azerbaijan, the Baku Climate and Peace Action Hub supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is supporting the implementation of this initiative.
