“Climate change is one of the main challenges facing humanity today. On the first day of the World Urban Forum, we once again witnessed this," Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, said at the event titled “WUF13 NGO Forum: Global Partnerships and Decision-Making,” APA reports.
He stated that Azerbaijan has encountered unusual and, in a certain sense, unexpected weather events that are not typically observed in the country: “Such processes are already taking place in different parts of the world. Therefore, cities are directly facing disasters caused by climate change. Without civil society institutions and expressing the desires and expectations of societies, state institutions cannot fully achieve the goal of building sustainable, self-sufficient and, most importantly, comfortable cities.”
He once again recalled President Ilham Aliyev’s vision for Azerbaijan’s future: “Yesterday, President Ilham Aliyev particularly emphasized Azerbaijan’s vision for the future. It can be concluded from that speech that Azerbaijan is truly the right and suitable place for holding such discussions. First of all, the Azerbaijani people possess an ancient urban planning culture. One of Azerbaijan’s historical cities, Gabala, was one of the important and developed cities of the ancient world as early as the 4th century BC.
For centuries and millennia, the Azerbaijani people have built various cities. These cities have played an important role in trade, cooperation, education, knowledge exchange and, most importantly, people’s lives. Today, we continue to preserve that culture. Because preserving cultural heritage in modern cities is a separate challenge. Baku is the clearest example of this. Here, we try to preserve historical heritage and combine it with elements of modern urbanization.”
