Religious communities can play an important partnership role for governments and international organizations in addressing the global housing crisis, Chris Elisara, founder and head of the U.S.-based Housing Equity and Development (HEAD) organization, said during the roundtable titled “Parliamentarians: Translating urban commitments into national action – the parliamentary pathway to housing for all” held within the framework of WUF13, APA-Economics reports.

According to him, approximately 80% of the world’s population is connected to religious communities, and these institutions can make a significant contribution to providing safe, secure, and accessible housing.

Chris Elisara noted that the Singapore Declaration adopted at the faith-based urban thought platform held in Singapore in 2017 emphasized that cooperation between religious organizations and UN-Habitat for the common good is essential for the success of the New Urban Agenda.

He stated that the “Faith Pavilion” Housing Call document presented within the framework of WUF13 affirmed that every person’s access to safe, secure, and affordable housing is a fundamental right.

Chris Elisara proposed strengthening institutional cooperation between UN-Habitat and religious communities, as well as deepening this partnership further in the process of reviewing the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 11.

According to him, the goal is not to create a separate agenda, but to accelerate the implementation of existing global commitments and jointly contribute to ensuring the right to housing.
