Urban parks, coastal zones and schoolyards should be used not only as green areas, but also as active public spaces, Anar Baghirov, the International Relations Director at the National Olympic Committee, said during the special session titled “Cities as Places for Play and Sport” held within the framework of WUF13, APA-Economics reports.
According to him, many cities have sufficient space and experience for the development of sports infrastructure. The main problem is not the lack of resources, but rather the improper coordination of existing opportunities.
Anar Baghirov noted that cities provide infrastructure and access opportunities, while sports institutions shape content, coaching staff and public interest.
He stated that public spaces are actively used in Azerbaijan through Olympic Day and other mass sports events, and that thousands of young people join these initiatives every year.
Anar Baghirov stressed that when cities and sports institutions act jointly, sport becomes an everyday component of urban life.
