Important projects have been implemented in Azerbaijan in the field of waste management, Etibar Abbasov, Chairman of the Board of “Tamiz Shahar,” said during the special session titled “Advancing waste management toward a circular economy” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.
He noted that a number of major projects have been carried out in recent years in Azerbaijan aimed at proper waste management and the protection of the urban environment. It was stated that “Tamiz Shahar” was established by Presidential decree in 2008, and its main area of activity has been improving waste management in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula.
It was noted that one of Azerbaijan’s main goals is to approach waste management as an important part of urban planning policy, starting from Baku.
During the speech, it was emphasized that an agreement had been signed between the Government of Azerbaijan and the World Bank, and within the framework of the project, a large waste management area covering 120 hectares and currently operating in Baku was established. At the same time, a waste management strategy for Azerbaijan was developed under the project. In 2009, one of Eastern Europe’s largest waste incineration plants in terms of processing capacity was built in Baku. It was noted that the plant’s annual processing capacity amounts to hundreds of thousands of tons, and that the facility’s energy generation capabilities are also taken into account. In addition, it was stated that the project for recycling unusable vehicles has been implemented for more than two years. Within the framework of the project, more than 26,000 unusable vehicles have been removed from circulation.
It was noted that citizens who hand over their vehicles are offered discounts when purchasing new means of transport.
