The housing crisis has become one of the priority issues on the political agenda of the European Union, Member of the European Parliament Marcos Ros Sempere said during the roundtable titled “Parliamentarians: Translating urban commitments into national action – the parliamentary pathway to housing for all” held within the framework of WUF13, APA-Economics reports.
According to him, rising housing costs, mortgage pressures, regional inequalities, and climate risks have turned housing into one of the key political, social, and territorial issues of our time.
Marcos Ros Sempere noted that, for the first time in the European Union, a European Commissioner responsible for housing issues has been appointed and an affordable housing plan is being prepared.
He stated that the European Parliament supports strengthening the financing of housing projects within the new budget framework covering 2028–2034.
The member of the European Parliament emphasized that housing policy cannot be considered separately from land use, transport, public services, and energy efficiency policies.
According to him, the limited financial capacity of local authorities is one of the main obstacles, and for this reason there is a need for stronger multi-level governance and additional financial resources.
