Nature-based solutions are already being systematically integrated into urban policies, Shruti Narayan, Managing Director for Regions and Municipalities at the C40 Cities Network, said during the panel discussion of the event titled “Climate and Housing Nexus” organized within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, APA reports.

“Approximately 100 cities included in the C40 network operate with high climate ambitions, and the first and main step in this approach is data-based, scientific and evidence-based planning,” she said.

According to Shruti Narayan, many cities are already implementing specific mechanisms: “For example, in São Paulo, construction areas larger than 500 square meters are required to keep a certain part permeable or greened, which systematically integrates climate resilience into urban planning. At the same time, some cities ensure the financing of nature-based solutions through taxation mechanisms.”

Shruti Naraya also touched upon the experience of Medellín, Colombia, noting that the city later came to better understand the importance of “green infrastructure” and urban regeneration, and that the “green corridors” model is regarded as an example worldwide in this field.

At the end of the speech, it was emphasized that such approaches make cities more resilient to climate change, biodiversity loss and urban risks.
