More than 30 percent of the urban population in Latin America lives in inadequate housing conditions, Mayor of Quilmes, Argentina, Mayra Mendoza said during the roundtable titled “Strengthening Local Action: Reinforcing Multilevel Governance for Adequate Housing and Sustainable Communities” held within the framework of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

According to her, millions of people in the region face overcrowding, limited access to drinking water, and shortages of social and urban infrastructure.

Mendoza noted that housing is a human right and that this issue should be regarded not as a privilege, but as a fundamental right that must be ensured by the state and society.

She stated that accelerating urbanization and deep social inequalities in Latin America are further exacerbating the housing problem.

The mayor of Quilmes emphasized that climate change and environmental risks particularly worsen the situation of vulnerable communities living in Global South countries.

According to her, adequate housing provision is one of the main conditions for social justice and sustainable urban development.
