Today, one of the most important directions of Azerbaijan’s urban development experience is the unprecedented reconstruction and restoration process being carried out in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur, Riyad Gasimov of the Main Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of Baku under the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture said during an event dedicated to Baku’s Master Plan held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.
He stated that the Great Return program creates opportunities for the construction of completely new cities and villages based on the principles of sustainability, innovation, digital governance and environmental responsibility: “The ‘smart city’ and ‘smart village’ projects being created in the liberated territories demonstrate how modern urban planning can support not only physical reconstruction, but also social revival, economic revitalization and long-term regional sustainability.”
Riyad Gasimov noted that urban planning and architecture have become one of the main priority directions of Azerbaijan’s national development agenda.
He emphasized that hosting WUF13 in Baku is a great source of pride: “This demonstrates our country’s commitment to sustainable urban transformation, international cooperation and innovative approaches to urban development. Under the leadership of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, urban planning and architecture have become one of the key priority directions of our national development agenda. This approach has been further strengthened by the declaration of 2026 as the ‘Year of Urban Planning and Architecture.’ This strategic decision highlights the growing role of cities in shaping economic development, environmental sustainability and quality of life.”
