Mobilizing private investment alongside state resources is essential for the successful implementation of housing policy, Sebastian Voelz, Director and Head of the Secretariat of UN-Habitat’s Local2030 Coalition, said during the roundtable titled “Parliamentarians: Translating urban commitments into national action – the parliamentary pathway to housing for all” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.
According to him, housing is not merely a separate sector, but a complex system closely linked with transport, utilities, economic development, and other areas.
Voelz noted that parliaments play an important role not only in conveying the needs of local communities to national policy, but also in transforming global commitments into legislation and practical action plans.
He stated that parliaments’ oversight function over the budget is crucial for financing housing policy. Deputies can ensure the allocation of relevant funds in the state budget while also creating conditions for attracting private sector investments.
According to the UN-Habitat official, close cooperation between national governments, local authorities, and parliaments is required for the local implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
