“If we want climate action to contribute to peace, we must invest in inclusive, sustainable, and migration-sensitive urban solutions to ensure inclusivity within society,” Director of Climate Action at the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Rania Sharshr, said in her message addressed to the opening of the session titled “Climate Action Contributing to Peace Through Urban Solutions in Fragile and Conflict-Affected Areas” held within the framework of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), APA reports.
“Cities are not only places where crises are concentrated, but also places where solutions can emerge.
Supporting local governments in managing urban expansion can help prevent competition over resources from turning into conflict. Climate-resilient housing and early warning systems help communities facing recurring climate shocks remain safer, more connected, and economically more resilient.
Climate action aimed at peace is not only about reducing emissions or adapting to climate impacts. It is about reducing inequalities, strengthening trust, and creating opportunities for people to live in conditions of stability and dignity. At the same time, it means ensuring the full inclusion of internally displaced persons, migrants, refugees, and host communities in planning and decision-making processes.
Because when cities are inclusive, sustainable, and resilient, they can become not only places of shelter, but also spaces of opportunity, coexistence, and peace,” the Director General’s message stated.
