"One of the main issues facing the world is the protection of clean water resources. As a result of climate change, clean water resources are facing serious threats, and this has now become one of the world’s main challenges," Secretary General of the Union of Architects and Engineers of the Turkic World, Ilyas Demirci, said during his speech at the event titled “Development of Azerbaijan’s First National Sustainability Standard: Sustainable Practices Standard (SPS)” organized within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.
He stated that the effects of global climate change are already being felt all over the world: “Forest fires, floods, droughts, erosion, and environmental disasters have become the shared responsibility of all humanity. We must make stronger decisions to protect our cities, natural resources, and living spaces.”
Ilyas Demirci noted that developing long-term policies for the protection of clean water resources is of vital importance:
“Scientific research shows that due to climate change, population growth, and irresponsible consumption, clean water resources are coming under increasing pressure. The depletion of groundwater, drying up of lakes, and pollution of water basins create serious risks for the future.”
The Secretary General emphasized that water, forests, and the environment are the common wealth of all people:
“Protecting these resources, using them efficiently, and passing them on to future generations in a healthy condition is our shared responsibility.”
He added that forests are of strategic importance for the sustainability of life: “Forests are the main foundation of clean air, climate balance, and biodiversity. Unfortunately, increasing forest fires and environmental pollution around the world are putting this important heritage at risk.”
Ilyas Demirci also stressed that increasing renewable energy sources, developing ecological technologies, and properly managing the water-energy nexus are important for sustainable development.
