Around 70% of greenhouse gas emissions are generated in cities, Haris Piplas, Head of Integrated Urban Solutions at Switzerland’s Drees & Sommer company, said during the event titled “Urban Transformation in Practice: Urban Experiences for Safe and Sustainable Communities,” held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA reports.
He noted that at the same time, society is undergoing rapid change.
“We no longer live in a society that simply operates ‘24/7’; we are living in an era where models of life and work are fundamentally changing. Environmental, social, and security challenges are now part of the daily reality of cities. Together with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and other partners, we are studying how to respond to disaster risks and crises. We are trying to bring the experience gained in this field into high-level discussions. Because practical urban action and high-level political discussions should not be separated from each other. We should not merely hold declarative sessions. Urban action and decision-making must be integrated with one another. Of course, this is not easy,” he said.
