We have developed by working on solutions related to housing, living environments and the environment, Massa Kone, a member of Habitat International Coalition, said during the roundtable of mass and civil society organizations titled “Community-led Action for Adequate Housing, Land and Basic Services in the Face of the Climate Crisis” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.
He stated that today, after 50 years of activity and experience, there are various opportunities for solving housing problems: “However, emerging realities show that real problems cannot be solved without proper organization. The housing problem and the massification of housing are linked to the interests of large companies. Whereas we must strive to preserve community ties and people’s relationship with land. Because the issue is not only construction.”
He said that this problem of massification creates new challenges in the fields of housing and business: “If communities are fragmented and people are deprived of their means of living, this will lead to even greater social problems. At the same time, when we talk about the expansion of cities, we should not forget villages. Villages are also changing and developing together with quality of life.
If urban development is based only on large companies with vast financial resources constructing huge buildings, ordinary communities will be left aside. Yet those people are the ones who have lived, worked and built lives there for centuries.
We want to develop rural areas, but in reality we are implementing development models based on very expensive and large-scale projects. These models make it difficult for poor people to remain in those areas and force them to migrate.”
