The French government aims to build 2 million new homes over the next eight years, including 100,000 social housing units annually, Lionel Causse, member of the French National Assembly, said during the roundtable titled “Parliamentarians: Translating Urban Commitments into National Action – The Parliamentary Path to Housing for All” organized within the framework of WUF13 in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

According to him, there are currently 38 million housing units in France, of which 7.6 million are social housing units. Despite this, demand for social housing remains high, and approximately 3 million applications are currently on the waiting list.

The parliamentarian noted that the financing of social housing in France is carried out through long-term credit mechanisms and more than 400 billion euros accumulated by citizens in special savings accounts called “Livret A.”

Causse added that the French parliament is working on two main directions until 2050. One of them is the efficient management of land resources and keeping land prices under control, while the other is the construction of low-carbon buildings and adaptation to climate change.

According to him, the goal is to achieve housing that is both environmentally sustainable and accessible and decent for all segments of the population.
