Alongside the declining birth rate worldwide, the importance of technology will continue to increase, Luis Gallegos, former Foreign Minister of Ecuador and Deputy Secretary General of the Global South NGO Platform, said during the side event titled “Building Sustainable Cities with Artificial Intelligence and Smart Infrastructure,” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.
“At the same time, the world’s population is rapidly aging. The number of elderly people is already enormous, and by 2050 this figure will reach 2 billion. This will happen in just 24 years.
We are talking about the use of robotics, artificial intelligence, and sensors in care services and support systems replacing human labor.
We are talking about billions of people here. If there are 1.3 billion people with disabilities and each of them is surrounded by at least two caregivers — parents, carers, or healthcare workers — this already means 2.9 billion people who need to benefit from technological opportunities and be integrated into the mainstream of society,” the former minister emphasized.
During the speech, attention was also drawn to the existing risks alongside the opportunities created by artificial intelligence and technology. It was noted that technologies should not be assessed only from a positive perspective, but that the dangers and social inequalities they may create should also be taken into account.
