Persons with disabilities should be more broadly involved in governance, Federico Batista Poitier, accessibility policy expert at UCLG, said during the roundtable on the rights of persons with disabilities titled “Beyond accessibility: Ensuring the right to adequate housing for all,” organized within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, APA reports.
Noting that organizations of persons with disabilities are not sufficiently represented in governance processes in a number of cities, the expert said that international efforts are underway to more actively integrate these groups into decision-making mechanisms.
Poitier also stressed that the global “Cities for All” initiative is making a significant contribution to the development of inclusivity and accessibility policies in cities.
The expert added that although the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is an important legal framework, the main goal is to transform its principles into concrete mechanisms at the local governance level.
In his opinion, services provided by cities should be accessible and inclusively designed for every citizen.
