Climate change, urbanization and post-conflict recovery processes are closely interconnected, and these factors require new approaches to urban planning, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Elshad Iskandarov said at the session titled “Climate action contributing to peace through urban solutions in vulnerable and conflict-affected areas” held within the framework of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

According to him, the impact of climate change is already being felt all over the world, and these risks are even more acute in conflict-affected areas.

“Reconstruction work in post-conflict areas is accompanied by additional challenges such as climate risks, mine threats and the safe return of people,” E. Iskandarov noted.

The ambassador stated that refugee camps in different parts of the world are also exposed to the effects of climate extremes, and this requires the attention of the international community.

According to him, the Baku Climate and Peace Action Hub serves to ensure that the voices of countries and communities affected by conflict are heard on international platforms.

Elshad Iskandarov noted that this initiative aims to expand the access of such countries to climate finance, attract investment for urban development projects and support the creation of sustainable communities.
