For Guinea-Bissau, climate change has already become not only an environmental problem, but also an issue of governance and stability, Deputy Foreign Minister of Guinea-Bissau Fatumata Jau said at the session titled “Climate action contributing to peace through urban solutions in vulnerable and conflict-affected areas” held within the framework of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

According to her, in countries with weak institutions, climate change creates more serious consequences by combining with economic instability, rapid urbanization and social vulnerability.

“Countries that contribute the least to climate change are often the least prepared for its consequences,” F. Jau noted.

The Deputy Minister stated that the Baku Climate and Peace Action Hub is an important international initiative that takes into account the interconnection between climate adaptation, urban resilience, peacebuilding and economic stability.

According to her, the economy of Guinea-Bissau is heavily dependent on climate-sensitive sectors such as mangrove forests, fishing and rice production.

F. Jau noted that salinization, coastal erosion, sea level rise and changes in rainfall patterns are placing increasing pressure on these systems.

She added that floods occurring during heavy rains in the capital city of Bissau show that climate risks are becoming a direct threat to urban governance, public health and social stability.
