Canada allocated more than $115 billion to improve housing outcomes through the National Housing Strategy launched in 2017, Janet Goulding, senior assistant deputy minister of housing, infrastructure and communities, said during the panel discussion titled “Environmentally Sustainable and Resilient Settlements” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

She stated that the strategy is built on a human rights-based approach and recognizes that access to adequate housing is the foundation for participation in the labor market, as well as playing an important role in education and healthcare outcomes: “The results are already visible. The housing needs of more than 741,000 families have been reduced or completely eliminated. More than 195,000 new housing units have been created. More than 328,000 homes have been renovated, and over 359,000 social housing units have been preserved.”

She also added that Canada has established a new federal institution called Built Canada Homes, aimed at accelerating large-scale housing provision: “Its activities focus on three main directions: opening underutilized public lands for housing construction for long-term public benefit; providing flexible financing covering the entire cycle from initial project planning to long-term affordability; and accelerating the implementation of modern construction methods to build homes faster and more efficiently.”
