"The development of energy projects takes time. Therefore, we must take proactive steps," said Rustam Gasimov, Deputy Chairman of Azerenergy OJSC, during the event titled “Digital Management Architecture of Azerbaijan’s Energy System” held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA-Economics reports.
He noted that reducing CO₂ emissions is one of the main goals of both Azerenergy and the Azerbaijani government:
“In general, since 2020, the construction of a new power plant with a total capacity of 525 megawatts, including two gas turbines and one steam turbine, has already become a reality. In addition, we will combine this with hydropower in order to preserve and further develop the balance of green energy.”
He stated that the issue of renewable energy and energy storage systems is a rather challenging area for system operators:
“Because the country has commitments regarding green energy and renewable energy. Especially after COP29 held in Azerbaijan last year, this issue has become an even greater obligation. Azerbaijan is one of the fastest-developing countries in Europe and the world in this direction. By 2028, approximately 1,910 megawatts will be integrated into the grid together with the existing 2-gigawatt renewable energy capacity. This is a highly complex technical process. To adapt to this, we introduced completely new technology in Azerbaijan — battery energy storage systems. In April and May of this year, two major battery storage systems were inaugurated with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev. Thus, by 2028, 2 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity will definitely be integrated into the grid.”
