“Almaty is actively implementing measures aimed at environmentally improving public transport,"  Deputy Mayor of Almaty, Nurlan Abdirakhim, said during the session titled “Cities Forum: Housing solutions for an inclusive and sustainable urban future” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

“The city’s bus fleet is being renewed, the share of gas and electric buses is being increased, dedicated lanes for public transport are being expanded, cycling infrastructure is being created, and new pedestrian spaces are being developed. One of the main directions is also the development of the ‘low-emission zone.’ We consider this mechanism an important tool for reducing transport emissions and gradually restricting the use of environmentally outdated vehicles,” he said.

Nurlan Abdirakhim stated that today Almaty already has a 64-kilometer BRT system and 13 kilometers of metro lines: “By 2030, a broader development of transport infrastructure is planned. Within this framework, 47 kilometers of new BRT lines, 31 kilometers of new metro lines, 31 kilometers of LRT lines and 42 kilometers of SkyTrain lines are envisaged. The creation of three largest transport hub centers and the construction of 46 new transport connections and crossings are planned. The development of transport connectivity of the Almaty agglomeration, including the direction of the Big Almaty Ring Road, is of particular importance. This will allow the distribution of traffic flow, reduction of the burden on the city center and improvement of the environmental situation. We are not simply creating new roads; we are forming a full-fledged multimodal transport system based on the integration of metro, BRT, LRT, SkyTrain and public transport. Special attention is also paid to the development of the atmospheric air quality monitoring system. In Almaty, the network of monitoring stations is being expanded, digital technologies are being applied for data analysis, and control over the condition of atmospheric air is being strengthened. For us, it is extremely important that environmental policy is based on objective monitoring data and modern digital management tools.”
