Baku. Farid Mirzayev – APA. The International Learning Conference: “Empowering Learning”, organized by the Azerbaijan Teacher Development Centre (ATDC), kicked off in Baku Nov. 17.

Delivering opening remarks at the conference, ATDC Director Graeme Pollock said the event will focus on learning, specifically on how schools, school leaders and teachers can work to enhance student learning outcomes, adding that the conference brings two outstanding international keynote speakers - Bill Martin (USA) and Debra Masters (New Zealand) to Baku.

“Bill and Deb will inspire us to reflect on our classroom practice in the light of international research and will present examples of where teachers and schools are having a significant impact on student learning outcomes,” Pollock said.

Tale Heydarov, Chairman of The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS), then made a speech at the conference, noting that the opening of the ATDC’s new building is a contribution to the State Strategy on Development of Education, approved by President Ilham Aliyev.

TEAS attaches huge importance to the development of education in Azerbaijan, Heydarov said, emphasizing that for this purpose the European Azerbaijan School, corresponding to advanced education standards, was founded in the country.

The TEAS chairman continued: “For children aged 3 to 5, the school offers education on local and international standards at primary and secondary school levels. The school is a member of the European Council of International Schools and the Council of International Schools and has gained authorization on the diploma programme of the International Bachelor Organization. “TEAS Press” and “Üç Alma” (Three Apples) publishing houses, established by TEAS, have published teaching materials in Azerbaijani on the basis of international education programmes as well as more than 150 different scientific and artistic-educational materials in cooperation with the world’s prestigious companies.

Heydarov said the participants of the two-day conference will be able to get acquainted with these books in the exhibition.

“The founding of ATDC, which we consider to be a new teacher development model in the post-Soviet area, is a major achievement in the area of education. The Center has been given a license as an additional educational center for teachers. For the Center to operate in line with modern standards, we have employed professionals. The Center has a library for scientific pedagogical teaching for teachers’ development. The library is equipped up to date. Assessing the views of local education system is one of the main purposes. Interesting lectures and presentations will be heard. The conference’s work is going to be efficient. New ties will be established,” he added.

Addressing the conference, Isa Habibbeyli, an academician, Vice-President of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), said TEAS prefers innovation in various spheres.

"Without innovation, it’s difficult to raise a new generation and prepare them for the future,” said the academician, stressing that the High Tech Park, established by the order of President Ilham Aliyev, made a huge contribution to the method “from the idea to its realization”.

According to him, innovations are of great benefit, given the realities in the country.

“The conference is open to innovations and marks a new approach to education in our country,” he added.

In his speech, Jafar Jafarov, Rector of Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, praised TEAS initiative towards empowering learning.
