A scientific seminar was held at the Institute of Geography of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) on November 22.
The seminar was chaired by academician Ramiz Mammadov, APA reports.
Zakir Eminov, head of the department of human geography at the Institute of Geography, made delivered a lecture on the topic “The main achievements of the period of independence: economic, geographical and demographic aspect.”
He stated that so-economic changes in Azerbaijan over the past 25 years affected the demographic processes, natural growth rate decreased while mortality rate increased.
“Demographic indicators are currently stabilizing. There is a great need for the implementation of a more active demographic policy for adjustment of demographic indicators and the increased state care for mothers and children,” Eminov added.
According to the scientist, from 1990 to 1995, migrants from CIS and Baltic countries to Russia accounted for 39.9%, while migrants from Azerbaijan for 61.6%.
“In recent years, the number of people migrating to Russia has considerably dropped. At present, the number of Russians living in Baku is about 120,000 and over 140,000 in the country,” he said.
The scientist added that about 20,000 Armenians live in Baku, in total there are nearly 120,000 Armenians in Azerbaijan.
