U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States could have eliminated everyone attending Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's funeral, but doing so would have left no one to negotiate with.
"I've been watching Khamenei's funeral. In fact, we could wipe out everyone there. But then there would be no one left to negotiate with," Trump said in an interview with Axios.
Trump added that the United States and Iran had agreed to pause negotiations for one week until the funeral concludes.
"There will be no shooting by either side during Khamenei's funeral. The Iranians are begging for a deal. I was surprised to see Iranians crying at Khamenei's funeral because I thought people hated him," Trump said.
