Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke over the telephone with his United States counterpart Donald Trump, with the two leaders discussing the conflict in Ukraine and other issues, Putin's aide, Yury Ushakov, said, APA reports.
"Today's telephone conversation between the two heads of state began with President Vladimir Putin personally congratulating Donald Trump and the entire American people on this significant holiday, recalling Russia's contribution to the development of American statehood," Ushakov revealed. During the call, Putin again stressed Moscow's readiness to pursue a diplomatic solution to the long-standing conflict in Ukraine, while taking into account Russian interests. Moreover, Ushakov stated the call took place at Washington's initiative.
"Our president has painted a picture of the real situation on the battlefield [in Ukraine], where Russian armed forces are confidently advancing, liberating one populated area after another," the presidential aide told the media, declaring that European countries have a "false" perception of the situation on the front.
