Azerbaijan applying new rules on driving licenses of foreign countries

Baku. Mubariz Aslanov – APA. Azerbaijan may apply new rules on driving licenses of foreign countries. With the new rules, foreign driving licenses will be valid for a month and foreigners will be given new rights, the parliament told APA.

In this regard, Article 35-1 (driving license issued by the concerned authority of a foreign country) is proposed to be added to the law “On traffic”.

Under Part I of the new Article, in accordance with the international agreements on traffic regulation, an Azerbaijani citizen, on the basis of a valid driving license issued by the concerned authority of a foreign country, has the right to drive vehicles in Azerbaijani territory for a period of one month from the day of entry into the country. To use vehicles more than a month, an Azerbaijani citizen shall change his/her license as designated in Parts 6-7 of Article 35.

Under Part II of the new Article, in accordance with the international agreements on traffic regulation, a foreigner or a stateless person temporarily residing in Azerbaijan has the right to drive vehicles in Azerbaijani territory on the basis of a valid driving license issued by the concerned authority of a foreign country. In case a foreigner or a stateless person obtains a temporary of permanent residence permit in Azerbaijan, he/she, in order to use vehicles in the territory of Azerbaijan, shall change his/her driving license within a month after obtaining the permit as designated in Parts 6-8 of Article 35.

Under Part 3 of the new Article, if a driving license is changed in the abovementioned cases (Part 1-2), along with the new one, a driving license issued by the concerned authority of a foreign country shall be given back to that person.

The draft amendments will be tabled at the parliament’s plenary session on Nov. 11.
