"The Neanderthal human remains discovered in Taghlar Cave are currently in the analysis stage in Japan," President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Academician Isa Habibbeyli, said at the opening ceremony of the 2026 archaeological and anthropological field research season of the ANAS, APA reports.

He stated that research is currently being conducted on the remains: "We are awaiting the results of the analysis from Japan. We will provide the global scientific community with comprehensive information about the results. The findings of the analysis are expected to be announced this year. This discovery is one of the most important achievements of archaeological excavations. After the discovery of the human jawbone remains, this will be the greatest contribution to archaeological science in more than half a century."

Note that an international expedition led by Azad Zeynalov conducted research in Taghlar Cave under an agreement signed with the University of Tokyo in 2023.

The main result of this year's research may be considered the discovery of paleoanthropological remains for the first time since 1968. It is believed that the remains belong to a Neanderthal human who lived approximately 80,000 years ago.
