Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov said that the issue of reinstating the death penalty in the country can be resolved through a nationwide vote - a referendum, said the head of state in an interview with the Kabar news agency, APA reports.
According to the president, the draft law, which envisages amendments to the country's constitution, will first be submitted to public discussion. Then the Constitutional Court will issue an opinion on the draft. If the procedures are passed in accordance with the procedure, the draft law can be adopted through a referendum.
"Currently, the death penalty is prohibited in Kyrgyzstan and every person has the right to life. However, if the majority of the population supports this change, the re-elected Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) must adopt the necessary laws to withdraw from international agreements and amend the existing labor legislation and other laws," Japarov said.
