“Symptoms such as fatigue, dull pain, nausea, and vomiting observed among the population in recent days are often signs of acute gastroenteritis or viral infections commonly known among the public as ‘stomach flu’,” infectious disease specialist and expert of the Ministry of Health Tayyar Eyvazov said in a statement to APA.
He said that the infections most commonly causing this condition are Adenovirus, Norovirus and Rotavirus, which lead to severe weakness, muscle pain and digestive system disorders in the body.
“Some strains of seasonal respiratory viruses may also be accompanied by abdominal symptoms. In addition, gastrointestinal symptoms may occur, particularly in hot weather, when bacteria such as Salmonella and Staphylococcus multiply rapidly in food and such food products are consumed.
To protect against infection, hygiene rules must be strictly observed. Hands should be washed frequently with soap for at least 20 seconds. Fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed with plenty of water, and attention should be paid to the storage conditions of meat and dairy products. Close contact with sick individuals and the use of their personal belongings should be avoided. When symptoms begin, plenty of water, mineral water or special electrolyte solutions should be used to prevent dehydration. There is no universal vaccine against these common gastrointestinal viruses for adults.”
Rotavirus vaccine is mainly administered to infants and children
“The rotavirus vaccine is mainly administered to infants and children. Antibiotics are not effective in viral cases. Treatment is usually symptomatic (anti-vomiting medications, sorbents and restoration of lost fluids), however, in cases of persistent severe vomiting, high fever (38.5°C and above), blood in stool or severe abdominal pain, and serious signs of dehydration (dry mouth, reduced urination, dizziness), immediate medical attention should be sought,” he added.
