Today marks the 5th anniversary of the liberation of Sugovushan and Talish villages of the Tartar district from the occupation of the Armenian armed forces, APA reports.

On October 3, 2020, the Azerbaijani Army cleared both villages of Armenian occupiers.

On that day, the glorious three-colored flag of Azerbaijan was raised in Sugovushan and Talish.

In 1992, the Aghdara district was abolished and its territory was divided among the neighboring districts of Aghdam, Tartar, and Kalbajar. The village, historically known as Sugovushan and renamed Madagiz during the Soviet era, is one of the settlements incorporated into the Tartar district.

Sugovushan was first liberated from occupation by the Azerbaijani Army in 1991-1992. However, in April 1994, it was reoccupied by Armenia.

The Sugovushan water reservoir and the Sugovushan-1 hydroelectric power station are located in the village area. After occupying Sugovushan, the Armenians established military units there. Military unit number 49971 was considered one of the best military units of the Armenian army in Karabakh. In addition, military unit number 33651, which the Armenian army referred to as the "6th defense zone," was also positioned in Sugovushan.

On October 3, 2020, the President of Azerbaijan and Victorious Commander-in-Chief, Ilham Aliyev, announced the liberation of Sugovushan from Armenian occupation. Later, the Commander-in-Chief congratulated Major General Hikmat Hasanov, who at that time was commanding the 1st Army Corps, on the occasion of the liberation of Sugovushan.

The Battle of Sugovushan is considered one of the most significant battles on the northeastern front during the Second Karabakh War of the Azerbaijani Army. During the battles in the Sugovushan-Aghdara direction, 4 tanks of the 77th tank battalion of the Armenian armed forces were destroyed, and 3 tanks were captured as trophies.

As a result of artillery strikes by Azerbaijani troops on the defensive positions of the 5th mountain rifle regiment of the Armenian armed forces stationed in the Aghdere direction, 4 vehicles of the regiment were destroyed, and there were numerous dead and wounded among the personnel. Several units of the 5th Mountain Rifle Regiment abandoned their combat positions and fled.

As a result of the liberation of Sugovushan from the enemy, the supply of water from the Sugovushan reservoir to the Tartar, Goranboy, and Yevlakh districts was restored, ensuring ecological balance.

At the legislative initiative of President Ilham Aliyev, the draft law “On naming the village of Madagiz in the Tartar district of the Republic of Azerbaijan as Sugovushan” was submitted to the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament). The draft was discussed and adopted at the plenary session of the parliament held on October 6, 2020.

Subsequently, President Ilham Aliyev signed the law on naming the village of Madagiz as Sugovushan. According to the document, the village of Madagiz, which is part of the Chayli village administrative-territorial unit of Tartar district, was renamed Sugovushan.

According to the relevant Orders signed by President Ilham Aliyev on December 29, 2020, and June 24, 2021, a group of military personnel was awarded the “For the Liberation of Sugovushan” medal.

The village of Talish, which was liberated from Armenian occupation on October 3, 2020, was the center of the Melikdom of Gulistan that existed in the 18th–19th centuries. The village of Talish previously belonged to the administrative territory of the Aghdara district. However, in 1992, the Aghdara district was abolished, and its territory was divided among the neighboring districts of Aghdam, Tartar, and Kalbajar. Talish village was also one of the villages incorporated into the Tartar district.

At the beginning of the Karabakh war, the village was occupied by the Armenian army. However, during the Aghdara operation in 1992, on June 16, as a result of a joint rapid offensive from the Tapgaragoyunlu direction by the 1st Goranboy Battalion led by National Hero of Azerbaijan Mahammad Hasanov and the tank battalion commanded by Nazim Bayramov (a total of 8 tanks), the village was liberated from the Armenian occupiers. During the attack, only one Azerbaijani soldier was wounded. However, in April 1994, attacking Armenian forces reoccupied the village.

On April 2, 2016, during an operation carried out by the Azerbaijani Army against Armenian occupiers, the strategic heights around Talish village were completely retaken from the enemy.

On the night of February 24-25, 2017, the Armenian armed forces provoked an incident aiming to seize the strategic heights around Talish village. However, during the operation carried out by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, they were stopped, and a drone (UAV) was destroyed.

Note that on October 3, along with the villages of Sugovushan and Talish, the villages of Mehdili, Chakhyrly, Ashaghi Maralyan, Shaybay, Guyjag in the Jabrayil district, and the village of Ashagi Abdurrahmanly in the Fuzuli district were also liberated from the occupation of the Armenian armed forces.
