109,525 people study in state higher schools of Azerbaijan

Baku. Ilhama Isabalayeva – APA. Education Ministry has today held a board meeting on the outcomes of 2008, APA reports. Education Minister Misir Mardanov said AZN 5.8 million was invested in education sector in 2003, while last year this figure was AZN 220 million. The minister said the figure was over AZN 1.3 billion in the state budget for 2009.

Underlining the most significant events of 2008, the minister said new curriculum had been applied in the first forms. Competition “Best hundred teachers” and “Best fifty schools”, 12th Congress of Republic Teachers took place, UNESCO Regional Conference in Support of Global Literacy was held in Baku, the second Education Sector Development Project was signed between the World Bank and Azerbaijani government, branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University was opened.

Misir Mardanov said AZN 577 is spent on secondary education of every pupil in Azerbaijan within a year. The minister said much work had been done to improve well-being of education employees, average monthly salary increased by AZN 257. Mardanov added that the number of preschool institutions, children and employees of these institutions had reduced. Despite this, the number of children going to kindergartens increased by 1305 in Baku.

The minister noted that 51,596 people were studying in vocational schools and 109,525 in higher schools.
