No need in paid donors in Azerbaijan

Construction of the National Oncology Centerâ€™s new building founded by the president of Azerbaijan is almost completed, press service of the Azerbaijan Health Ministry told APA. The Thalassemia Center which construction was initiated by the president of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva, will also be handed over soon. The center will also provide bone-marrow transplantation. As a result of measures taken within the State Program on development of blood bank, blood components donors and blood servicesâ€, the blood bank was increased considerably. 124 voluntary blood donor actions, which involved nearly 40 thousand people, were held in 2008. As a result of these measures, need in paid donors was eliminated in the country. 5.5 tons of blood was collected in 2003 and this figure leveled up to 17 tons in 2008, which enables the country to meet its needs in blood.
