13 mines blasted in Azerbaijan this year

Baku. Ramil Mammadli – APA. Chairman of the Azerbaijan Campaign to Ban Landmines Hafiz Safikhanov held a press conference on the outcomes of 2008, APA reports. Safikhanov said that Azerbaijan had not joined Mine Ban Treaty (Ottawa Convention) because of the state of war with Armenia, but fulfilled most commitments of the convention. Facts on production of mines and collection of resources were not recorded in Azerbaijan in 2008. Azerbaijani government signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2008 and the parliament ratified it on November 2. Safikhanov said according to the information obtained from various sources, 16 people suffered from mines and unexploded ordnances in 13 cases in Azerbaijan in 2008.
“14 of them were civilians and 2 were servicemen. 1 civilian died, 2 children, 11 more civilians and 2 servicemen were wounded,” he said.
Safikhanov said mines and UXOs had blasted in Baku, Aghdam, Fuzuli, Terter and Khojavend regions of the country.
