Monitoring Group of Human Rights Protection Organizations publicizes annual report

Baku. Hafiz Heydarov – APA. Monitoring Group of Human Rights Protection Organizations publicized annual report on 2008, APA reports. Addressing the press conference of the monitoring group on the outcomes of the year Novella Jafaroglu said the improvement in the field of human rights in Azerbaijan in 2008 was not satisfactory.

Speaking about the report human rights defender Saida Gojamanli said necessary activities had not been taken in the country for the solution of social problems. She regretted that there had not been positive improvements concerning Azerbaijan’s number one problem Karabakh conflict. The human rights defender underlined that no noticeable activities had been carried out for the solution of political rights in the country and added that there were 27 political prisoners in Azerbaijan, besides, freedom of assembly, freedom to elect and to be elected were limited.
Expressing her regret for imprisoned journalists, Saida Gojamanli said all that damaged Azerbaijan’s international image.

Member of the monitoring group Chingiz Ganizadeh said struggle against corruption had been organized weakly. The report of the monitoring group disapproves the position of official bodies to discontinue radio broadcasts of Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and BBC.
The report also notes that the local media representatives’ opportunities to get information are restricted in the country.
