ECHR to pass decision on appeals of Azerbaijani citizens next week

Baku. Victoria Dementieva–APA. European Court of Human Rights will pass a decision on appeals of Azerbaijani citizens next week, APA reports.
Ibrahim Guliev’s claim against Lithuania will be considered on December 16.
The applicant, Ibrahim Gulijev, is an Azerbaijani national, who was born in 1971 and lives in Biedermansdorf (Austria). His wife and two children are Lithuanian citizens and live in Lithuania. Relying in particular on Article 8 (right to respect for private and family life) of the European Convention on Human Rights, Mr. Gulijev complains about his expulsion from Lithuania to Azerbaijan.
On December18, 2008 two cases will be considered. Ten Azerbaijani applicants raised a claim on the case “Aliyev and Others v. Azerbaijan”. In May 2003 they founded “Azerbaijani Lawyers Forum”, a non-profit organisation. Relying in particular on Article 11 (freedom of assembly and association), they complain about the significant delay in the state registering their association.
The applicants, Rovshan Asgar oglu Mahmudov and Yashar Vaqif oglu Agazade, are Azerbaijani nationals, who were born in 1961 and 1979 respectively and live in Baku (Azerbaijan). They were editor and journalist for the newspaper, “Müxalifət” (Opposition). Relying in particular on Article 10 (freedom of expression), the applicants complain about their conviction and sentencing to five months’ imprisonment for defamation of a prominent politician and well-known expert on agriculture on account of their publication of an article concerning problems in Azerbaijan’s agricultural sector.
