39 died of AIDS in Azerbaijan this year

She said 383 of those patients were citizens of Azerbaijan and 9 were foreigners.308 of the patients were men and 75 women. 46 Azerbaijani citizens passed the AIDS stage within a year, 39 of them died. 220 people were infected with HIV through injection drug use, 77 through heterosexual intercourse, 1 through homosexual intercourse, 4 were diagnosed with mother-to-child transmission. It is being analyzed how 81 people have been infected.

Gadirova said HIV infection was for the first time recorded in Azerbaijan in 1987. 1771 people had been infected with HIV since 1987. 1701 of them were Azerbaijani citizens, 70 were foreigners. 338 Azerbaijani citizens have passed the AIDS stage of the disease so far. 232 have died of AIDS.

Hagigat Gadirova said HIV infection facts had been discovered in 589 families in Azerbaijan within the past 16 years. In 14 families mother, father and child, in 125 families husband and wife, in 414 families only men and in 36 families only women were infected.

Gadirova said that HIV infection facts had been recorded most in Shirvan region of Azerbaijan in the past year. Shirvan is followed by Hajigabul, Lankaran, Sumgayit, Astara and Yevlakh. Gadirova also added that depending on the medicines used in the HIV treatment, the government spent from AZN 100-200 up to AZN 8000 within a year.
