Baku. Kamala Guliyeva –APA. An international scientific conference entitled “Strabon Way as a part of the Great Silk Road” takes place in Baku. The two-day conference was organized by the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and UNESCO International Institute of Central Asian Studies and dedicated to the studying of unique shipping route as a part of Great Silk Road in early A.D.
ANAS President Mahmud Karimov said at the opening ceremony of the conference that this trade route started from China and India, passed through the Central Asia, Caspian Sea, South Caucasus and Azerbaijan and Georgia via Kura River and set economic, commercial and cultural ties between the Black Sea and Mediterranean peoples two thousands years ago. The route was studied by historian Strabon and is known as “Strabon Way” in scientific literature. Karimov said the Strabon Way was not researched enough archeologically and historically and therefore Baku conference could be evaluated as a first step of the large-scale international project for comprehensive researching of the Strabon Way. Karimov said Asian-European trade and transport projects carried out in Azerbaijan had deep historic roots and East-West routes passed through Azerbaijan in the most ancient times.
