Azerbaijani journalists visited the Shah-i-Zinda memorial complex, one of Samarkand's oldest and most famous historical and architectural monuments, as part of a media tour, APA's correspondent dispatched to Uzbekistan reports.

Media representatives familiarized themselves with the history of the complex, its architectural features and the mausoleums located there.

The journalists were informed that the name “Shah-i-Zinda” means “Living King.” The formation of the complex dates back to the 11th century, and over the centuries, mausoleums and religious structures belonging to different periods have been built there.

The complex also houses the mausoleum of Qutham ibn Abbas, which is considered one of the sacred sites of the Islamic world. According to Islamic tradition, Qutham ibn Abbas, a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, was one of those who contributed to the spread of Islam in Samarkand.

It was noted that Shah-i-Zinda, in addition to being an important part of Samarkand's historical and cultural heritage, is one of the city's main tourist attractions. Together with other important monuments in the historical part of Samarkand, the complex is protected as part of the “Samarkand – Crossroads of Cultures” heritage site included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
